Anxiety Agoraphobia

Anxiety is something everyone experiences. We all have situations that we might feel nervous or worried about and experience some of the symptoms of anxiety such as headache or stomachache, heart palpitations, and others. This is all very normal. However, when anxiety is experienced repeatedly, and often from the same type of stimuli you may have an anxiety disorder.

One type of anxiety disorder is agoraphobia. This term comes from the Greek word for marketplace. It implies a fear of large open public spaces. However, this is quite a simplified term for what agoraphobia really involves.

In extreme cases agoraphobics refuse to even leave their home because of their fear. But what is it that causes the type of terror that would keep someone from even leaving their home? Let’s take a look at where the phobia begins.

In almost all cases of agoraphobia there was a pre existing condition of panic disorder. This is key. It means that the person has already suffered from a number of panic attacks. Presumably these attacks have taken place in different situations and the person has developed a fear of repeat attacks.

More specifically, they have developed a fear of having a panic attack in a place from which it would be difficult or embarrassing for them to escape. The sense of being unable to remove themselves comfortably from an environment in case of a panic attack is terrifying and leads them to avoid such places.

This type of phobia can obviously interfere greatly with a normal lifestyle. It becomes difficult to do basic tasks such as shopping or going to work. The person suffering from the disorder prefers to stay at home rather than risk what might happen while out in public. This is debilitating.

Fortunately there are treatments for anxiety agoraphobia. They are similar to those for other anxiety disorders and include various forms of therapy as well as medications. The earlier a person seeks treatment and begins therapy or taking medication, the better their results will be and the sooner they can return to a more normalized life.

Cognitive behavioral therapy focuses on educating the person about their condition, thus removing some of the mystery which increases fear. It also has the goal or helping the person understand their fears and why they are possibly not valid.

Antidepressants have been proven effective in treating agoraphobia as they have other anxiety disorders. Also, many people feel that herbal treatments are very effective. This is a good option for those looking for a natural remedy, but research these treatments carefully and consult your doctor before trying them out.

As with any other medical condition, a healthy lifestyle can go a long way in alleviating symptoms of anxiety agoraphobia. A healthy diet and exercise as well as getting sufficient sleep will put you in the best physical and mental condition for treating your anxiety disorder.
